Mythbusting This CRAZY TV Scene

After watching a cast saw cut through a metal pole in the show Royal Pains, we wondered, "is that accurate?" Cast saws are known to be able to cut through casts but not skin, so could one actually be used to cut through a metal pole? Today we're putting that myth to the test and seeing whether or not it gets busted.

  • Judging by the sparks in clip you had shown that blade is spinning, not occilating. If you look, the spark are shooting out one side. I have an occilating rescue saw, made for cutting where shearing (jaws of life) isn't ideal and with it, the spark shoot out in both directions. Also the spark looks like CGI

  • Before even watching this I knew it was not going to work. Why has nothing to do with the actual saw and everything to do with the blade. If you swapped out the standard blade from this to an oscillating saw blade designed to cut metal then you would be able to do it. The design of the oscillating saw is actually derived from the cast cutting saw. There have been changes made to the design, such as a different style of blade mount. However at its core an oscillating saw is still a cast cutting saw.

Supposedly it was because the nurse didn't use multiple plunge cuts with the saw and instead cut into and drug it along the length of the cast cutting the skin of my aunt's arm. It wasn't deep but it hurt according to her, think of getting a very long papercut.

    Daniel ADaniel A29 күн мурун
    • You got that backwards actually. You multi tool oscillator is a modified and improved version of a cast saw. The cast saw came out in the mid 1940s, while the first variation "Master Tool" (The Fein Multimaster RS) came out over 40 years later in the late 1980s. The speed of a cast saw is optimized for cutting plaster and fiberglass and they only come with blades optimized for cutting those materials. Multi Tools/Master Tools/Oscillating Saws have variable speed motors so that they can be dialed in to the proper speed range for the blade used and materiel being cut.

  • So um... I don't know if I had a very overly aggressive & careless nurse (which I'm 99% sure is at least part of it) or if hospital-grade cast saws are significantly different than this one, but I can attest that they can indeed hurt you plenty. I had a full-arm cast removed 2yrs ago & still have a scar on my forearm from the saw that the nurse was using cutting through the cast & underlying bandages to my skin underneath. I will say that I think the initial "trauma" that caused the scar was more of a burn caused by the heat of the saw as it swelled up like a welt almost immediately, but it's still in a nick sort of shape like a cut would cause. I don't want to cause any fearmongering or anything, but I was a little uncomfortable with how harmless Nate made the saw seem. It didn't cause a big injury for me, but it still hurt plenty & it was infuriating that even the surgeon I saw minutes after having the cast removed wouldn't even acknowledge the fact that one of her staff had just burned me with the saw/said it couldn't possibly cause any harm when there's no way I could've given myself that sort of fresh marking moments after having that portion of my arm exposed & accessible for the first time in 2months.
